Large Glass Lathe Operator — Experienced only

Interview and Tryout

The Job:

  • Assemble large Pyrex laboratory assemblies including jacketed ware on our large Litton K-Lathes.
  • Become proficient in operating our Heathway 21” bore lathe from resizing very large tubing to assembling 200 liter vessels and more.
  • Large apparatus ranges from 5-200 liter vessels and tubing 75-465 mm OD. This position is geared to an individual who will work the larger end of that range.
  • Common job tasks consist of center necking and side necking 50, 75 and 100 liter flasks, round bottoming heavy wall tubing, jacketing complex ware with various seals, making various types of flanges and much more.
  • The job is challenging and requires teamwork as well as solo work.
  • In order to learn the ins and outs of how this very large glass flows differently than smaller ware, it is necessary to work with others and assist.  Becoming an excellent Assistant is a must for someone to become an excellent Master.
  • The job is in a production environment. Our job orders of each product on a K-Lathe typically range from 1-25 whereas the Heathway range from 1-10.    
  • The job entails working with management, co-workers and engineering/design personnel.
  • The job requires dedication to wanting to be one of the best for the best.

The Candidate:

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience glassblowing with the last 5 dedicated to large apparatus that falls into the range that we classify as large apparatus as described above
  • Will work closely with our leading Large Lathe Operator with regard to training and assisting
  • Wants to be challenged, wants to be different
  • Possesses self-initiative to want to do this big end work
  • A level-headed communicator and worker who strives to be productive
  • Ability to read and comprehend prints and processes, read a ruler/tape
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to focus and stay focused
  • Ability to think independently and tune out nonsense
  • Ability to learn from mistakes and get back on track to do better
  • Must think the process through before embarking to preserve the piece and your safety
  • Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time, bend, kneel, reach/lift/push/pull/carry awkward sized objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to take the heat from the fires as well as the ambient temperatures during summer
  • Excellent attendance
